Birtukan Dejene is an award winning visual artist, art educator and creative painter based in Addis Ababa – like her brother Yonas Hailu. She graduated from Addis Ababa University School of Fine Art. After her graduation, Birtukan continued teaching art for 4 years from 2010-2014. She is now full time studio artist and what she really loves about her job is her full dedication for art and her ability to align visual art for her community that includes charity art exhibitions. Due to her exposure, her impact most of the time enables her to experience new ideas, creative thinking and trans-disciplinary art activity.
Birtukan quotes “art is the soul of life that cleanses human beings!” she believes human beings have kept on evolving all these years because they can imagine, align their vision and implement
creativity to reality whilst working as a team. Birtukan is very passionate about the power of education and art, and that is why she offers free art class in his community. “I teach them on
how to be creative and free-thinkers able to articulate their ideas and bring change in their society.”
Birtukan is now actively participating in Ethiopian Female Visual Association an initiative program supported by European Union and the British Council. The initiative aims to empower the creative community to speak to one collective and powerful voice advancing positive dynamic visions of art in the future.
