Noora Hasan Al Ghatam is a contemporary artist and is interested in portraying the localisation of modern and global influences into current Middle Eastern culture. She has been an avid oil painter for most of her life and is mainly self taught. A significant turning point in her life as an artist was when she travelled to London to earn her graduate degrees from the London School of Economics.
During her time in London, she often visited art exhibits in museums and specialized art galleries, which inspired her and contributed to the advancement of her art journey. She also enrolled in short summer courses in Central St. Martins and Chelsea College of Art to develop her skills even further. Her current work as a lecturer at the University of Bahrain and researcher is linked to her current art projects in that it is also an expression of themes of how we adapt innovations into our increasingly globalized realities in the region.
Her paintings in the early years focussed on landscapes in Bahrain and later Europe. Her interest later shifted to focus on various dimensions of culture which are present in her most recent art work. The first group of work focuses on realist images of horses which from her perspective represent the persistence of Arabian culture that is juxtaposed upon abstract and modern backgrounds to reflect modernization and change.
Some of these art pieces have been exhibited in Ella’s Art Gallery in Bahrain in 2016.
